Welcome to the Irvine Microsoft Technology Center

Ever wonder what a day at the Microsoft Technology Center (MTC)would be like?  Have you ever even heard of the MTC? For those who dont know, MTCs are places where Microsoft sets up environments to help companies envision, architect and demonstrate solutions with their products.  I recently was able to visit one and have a talk with some of their employees…

The more formal definition of an MTC can be found at  http://www.microsoft.com/mtc/default.mspx; They define them as:

Microsoft Technology Centers

Microsoft Technology Centers (MTCs) provide everything you need — technology experts, industry leaders, and an outstanding environment — to envision, architect, and demonstrate a secure, customized solution, based on Microsoft and partner technologies.

An MTC’s dynamic collection of resources shortens your development time by removing traditional barriers, and reduces the total cost of solution acquisition. Drawing on the integrated innovation of Microsoft products and technologies, the MTC can be a powerful resource for your organization

I was able to visit the Irvine campus.  MTC welcome desk

When you walk in you are greeted by the typical Microsoft logo and receptionist.  There they take your company name and tell you which room you have been assigned to and where your conference will be talking place.

Whille walking down the hall they had this glass display of their test data center.  Along the bottom of the glass, they display the logos off all the “partner” companies that donated hardware to it.  The setup is supposed to be state of the art and able to simulate most server situations

When you go into the meeting, they had breakfast waiting for us.  It was made up of eggs, potatoes, and various other goodies.

They had plenty of food on hand, and candy in the kitchen.  If you look in the refrigerator you will find plenty of varities of beers, though I passed on those.

After everyone gets settled in, Microsoft sits down and in our meeting tries to help find out what problems you are having and then to find out what steps they can help with in showing you how to get to your software goals.  Along they way they give you a tour of the office, and they gave us a demo in the “Envisioning Center”

The envisioning center was a nice demo room where they could play out certain user roles to show you how the solutions were supposed to act if setup correctly, and demo all the “cool” features of a product.

They has some cool “chill” places with a fooze ball table and nice chairs to sit and watch the Microsoft ads. The view from the windows were also pretty nice, as I beleive we were 18 stories up. At the end of the day, we went home with a few gooides. Over all it was a good experiance and would recommend trying to go if you ever have a chance.
