I just came up with an idea for our developers in my office. We currently have a small team of 9 under the same manager. What if one Friday out of every month, we selected 3 team captains, where they then picked teams and had a code off challenge? I think that this would help the slower coders get better faster. Kind of like a learn doing, where slower coders would learn from the more senior.
Break down:

Set up Virtual PC’s with all tools developers will need pre-installed. Pick team captains at random. Give the 3 teams the same challenge, and set a deadline. At the end, each team gives a 10 min presentation on what they did followed by a 10 min user question session. Teams then would vote for the best product, but they cant vote on their own.

You could provide prizes or just the title of monthly winner would be great!
